ongoing war of etiquette vs. bodily demands; for the true gentleman or gentlewoman, faced with
such a situation, will simply allow absolutely nothing to happen until the other individual leaves.
(This is yet another instance of the classic, all-encompassing rule of etiquette: "When there is no
appropriate action, perform no action at all.") In order to make this easier, it is suggested that
you always have a few good books with you, a well-stocked supply of food, and perhaps a
portable radio or VCR player. There is one case on record where two highly distinguished
gentlemen, finding themselves in just such a circumstance, remained at their post for years,
having food and supplies sent in, and not proceeding with the matter at hand until one of them
(in this case, the one on the left) passed away....
